The National Key Laboratory of Biochemical Engineering (NKLBE) is a research base for downstream processing in biotechnology in China. It was endorsed to set up by the State Planning Commission of China (SPCC) in 1988. NKLBE was open to researchers nationally and internationally in 1992. In the year of 1995, NKLBE passed the assessment of the State Development Planning Commission of China. In 2001, the laboratory passed the evaluations by the Ministry of Science and Technology .The director of NKLBE is Professor Zhiguo Su, and the director of the scientific committee is Professor Shengli Yang who is a member of the National Academy of Engineering. The main research area is cell culture and bioseparation with emphasis on scale-up theory and technology to optimize biological preparation processes.
